This Transitional Jacket Is Now A Vogue Editor Essential

They say that good things come in threes, but in the fashion microcosm that is the Vogue office, they are more likely to tick up into the teens. It’s a phenomenon that was recently observed by fashion writer Olivia Allen, who noticed a sudden increase in the number of blue shirts and jeans frequenting the (much photographed) elevators. “The hive mind had taken hold and I realised that, despite my best efforts, I am, perhaps, just like other girls,” she wrote.

It is indeed a curious phenomenon that occurs when you congregate many fashion obsessives in one space – whether knowingly or not, certain recurring wardrobe items or outfit pairings start to emerge. It’s like when you synced periods with your roommates at university (known as the McClintock effect), but… make it fashion? Well, apparently this sartorial osmosis shows no sign of slowing down, because this month, there has been another trending item populating Condé Nast towers: the bomber jacket.

Maybe Venus is in the 12th house, which means we all had a sudden subconscious desire to wear shell jackets, or something. Or maybe, we just all recognise the fact that, put quite simply, a bomber jacket looks great with everything – and not only looks great, but has the power to bring a directional spin to anything you pair it with. A white tee and jeans will take on a sporty twist; a floaty summer dress will feel instantly edgier; a pair of tailored trousers catapulted into cool-and-casual territory.

Brands-wise, second-hand is a popular option amongst the Vogue team, with multiple colleagues sourcing their bombers from resale sites, such as Vinted, eBay and, of course, the Vogue Vintage Sale. Also make sure to check out surplus army stores for high-quality, and often budget-friendly, bombers. Elsewhere, The Frankie Shop is great for oversized options – the Astra is a favourite amongst the fashion crowd – meanwhile Alpha Industries is known for its bomber jackets in classic silhouettes and colourways. Speaking of colourways, neutral shades are always a winner, with khaki, navy and black offering that timeless bomber vibe. Then for fit, we recommend sizing up to achieve that perfect slouch.
