As a seasoned attendee, my approach to festival outfits is pretty straightforward. I’ll pack with the intention of wearing at least one outfit that looks put-together, most likely to make an appearance on the first or maybe the second day (last year it was a cut-out Louisa Ballou minidress), but by the end, I’m in bikini tops and trackies.
In my late teens and early twenties, I dressed for the weather I wanted rather than the reality, and learnt from my mistakes – see: drenched, cold, but still having fun. Nowadays, I keep a 66 North waterproof handy and exclusively wear Danner boots for the duration (rather than dishevelled Air Max 97s and DMs of decades past), unless I’m trekking from the tent to brush my teeth, in which case I’ll wear Hokas or Merrells.
The shift to functionality arrived post-lockdown. I entered a sprightly 23-year-old, but almost three years later, at the age of 25 going on 26, found myself reintegrating into the festival circuit feeling considerably aged, and with a desire for a tent upgrade. Why was I wearing a bomber jacket that offered zero insulation when I could wear something specifically designed to withstand the elements? Or shoes that weren’t even made for running, let alone 30,000+ steps through mud, grass and unidentified terrain? It was a coming-of-age moment I’m glad I experienced, because it boosted my stamina and endurance at a time when it felt like both were dwindling.
That being said, amidst the high-performing pieces, I still pay homage to my carefree past with thigh-grazing hemlines and a good dose of sheerness, be it a gossamer-thin lace dress with swimwear beneath (wearing a waterproof jacket on top counteracts the impracticality should the heavens open), mini shorts and a baggy vintage graphic tee, or a whimsical skirt and tank top.
I’m yet to decide the outfits I’ll be wearing to Glastonbury, but scroll on for some combinations I have in mind…
