The skies may have been brooding with the intensity of Adrien Brody preparing for yet another tormented male lead, but that didn’t deter the show-goers on the grey streets of men’s fashion week, who delivered a slew of lust-worthy layered looks this January.
For some reason, there was something about the men’s show attendees this season that particularly captured my imagination. Rather than perfectly posed, head-to-toe designer ensembles, there seemed to be a return to more easy-going, thrown together pairings that offered the sort of idiosyncratic details that make an outfit seem like someone’s own: a rumpled shirt here, an awkwardly knotted school tie there. While I am loathe to use the word “real”, there was something about these outfits that felt more authentic – like the sort of person you might spot in the street and wonder who they are, what they do, and where their boots are from.
So what were our key learnings from these fashion week looks? Layered outerwear seems to be a recurring theme – be it a bomber over a trench coat or a leather jacket over a blazer – which is handy for the Baltic temperatures we’re experiencing right now. Elsewhere, it’s clear that the slouchy trouser or jean plus a flat shoe is a failsafe pairing: one show-goer opted for mid-rise jeans and Ugg boots (yes, they’re back), while another leaned into the utility trend with cargo trousers and combat boots. We also have to give a shout-out to the knitwear layering on display, which manifested in cricket jumpers over roll-necks and pinstripe shirts peeking out from underneath crew-neck cardigans. Essentially, every single ensemble is ready to be copied and pasted into your personal outfit oeuvre this spring.
