Over the decades, each of the “big four” fashion week cities has developed its own unique character: Paris has become known for its heritage fashion houses, and London regarded as a hotbed for up-and-coming design talent. Milan, meanwhile, is considered a hub for high-octane glamour, with New York the destination for big-name, commercially savvy brands. Of course, these days the lines are more blurred, with newer fashion weeks, such as Copenhagen, offering up a coterie of brands that operate at the intersection of commerce, high fashion and innovation, all while established cities are challenging their assigned roles. Take New York, which is beginning to assert itself on the new-gen talent front, with the likes of Diotima, Connor McKnight and Luar leading the charge.
New York has also served as the backdrop for some pitch-perfect street style in recent seasons, delivering the sort of looks that feel directional, but also wholly wearable. Over the past five days show-goers pounding the streets of Manhattan to take in the spring/summer 2025 collections have proven that “back to school” dressing is alive and well.
Vogue’s styling takeaways from the Big Apple this season? Firstly everyone – and I mean everyone – was in tailoring, be it boxy suiting, shirts or smart skirts. It’s a real testament to our enduring passion for polish, and an evolution of 2023’s “quiet luxury” obsession. Take your cues from US Vogue’s Maddy Fass, who layered a pink shirt under a crew-neck knit, mesh skirt and vintage leather jacket. We also love the high-low styling of another street-styler who paired tailored trousers with a gorpy technical jacket.
