The word embellishment might make you think of flashy crystal and sequin partywear, however in 2025 it’s less about rhinestones, and more about sculptural detailing. One way to elevate your sandal game this summer is to turn to styles that are detail-led, with refined metal shapes or stone embellishments adorning the straps, making your shoes look like an extension of your jewellery collection.
One of the brands leading this aesthetic is Amanu, which decorates its sandals with beautiful, sculpted chains, pebbles and links. “The inspiration really started during a sourcing trip to Milan,” explains Amanu’s founder, Anita Patrickson. “I was looking for something fresh in terms of embellishments and details for footwear, but honestly, everything felt a bit uninspired.” This gave her the push to think more personally, as she explains “my family is originally from Kenya, and I knew of incredibly skilled metalworkers based in Kibera, a community in Nairobi – their ability to craft these beautifully organic shapes using such raw materials completely moved me. It felt like an opportunity to highlight their artistry in a new context — and bring that sensibility to footwear.”
The key to making this look elevated and not overdone, is that the rest of the sandal needs to be relatively muted and classic – a simple colour palette and thin straps form the ideal backdrop for added embellishment. “It’s all about restraint – clean, pared-back design with a sense of intention,” says Patrickson. “When you layer in these subtle, sculptural details, it brings a sense of understated refinement. Every detail is carefully considered and thoughtfully integrated so it feels like a natural part of the silhouette, not an afterthought.”
Shoe designer Gianvito Rossi has also been leaning into this aesthetic, with the straps of heeled thong sandals and flip-flops embellished with Chakra-inspired natural cabochon stones, which have a smooth, domed finish, punctuating the sleek chocolate brown leather. The Row is largely responsible for the return of the humble rubber flip flop, making this practical footwear a fashion-forward choice. However the gemstones put these in a whole different league to your average beach shoe, making them far too precious for a dip in the ocean, and more suited for elegant evening plans than a day at the pool.
