The first iteration of jeans (as we know them today), arrived in 1873, courtesy of Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, who designed denim work pants with metal rivets. Jeans are considered timeless and thus, they surpass trends – though there are noticeable fluxes in popularity for certain styles. Barrel-leg silhouettes, dubbed “horseshoe” jeans, became a cult shape at the end of last year, while Miuccia Prada mooted the return of skinnies on her autumn/winter 2024 Miu Miu runway. For autumn, dark denim is on a steady rise, and has been seen on both on and off the catwalk.
Deep indigo washes, especially those rendered in rigid fabrics, can bring a sense of polish to the otherwise casual staple. Endorsers have taken to wearing dark denim jeans with simple foundational pieces like white shirts and tanks, as well as statement tops and bold knitwear.
