If you’ve been tuned in to Instagram this summer, it’s likely you’ll have spotted at least one of the following: jorts, milkmaid tops, sportif style, naked shoes, naked dresses, crochet hot pants, baseball caps, woven tote bags, Brat green. The list goes on. There have also been numerous striped (specifically vertical striped) trouser sightings, both IRL and on the grid. Once I had clocked them, I started to see them everywhere.
Pyjama-esque silhouettes, and people styling out actual pyjamas, have been particularly popular in recent months. In a similar vein to 2024’s boxer short, this slouchy trend may well be a hangover from endless days spent in lockdown loungewear a few summers back. And while I’ve spotted striped trousers in parks, on the Tube and in supermarkets, they have also had a turn on the high-fashion circuit, appearing on the spring/summer 2024 runways of Dries Van Noten and Louis Vuitton.
The trick to avoiding looking like you’ve literally rolled out of bed? Pair your trousers with actual shoes rather than slippers – sturdy sandals, ballet pumps or trainers will fit the bill, but you could also get away with flip-flops – layer up your jewellery and grab a handbag. Really, styling this trend is just as effortless as rolling out of bed.
