Old trends are being revived at a rate of knots in 2022. The latest retro piece doing the rounds on the fashion set? The denim miniskirt. A wardrobe staple in the Noughties, belt-like denim minis are back with a vengeance, frayed hems, embellishments and all.
Among the influential names adopting the new-age denim mini? Dua Lipa, who clad herself in a micro denim Fendace skirt from Donatella Versace and Kim Jones’s joint collection back in May. The singer teamed the piece, which has a statement Zucca buckle and monogrammed pockets, with a matching bralette, blazer and boots.

The Fendace skirt may be one of the skimpiest styles of the season, but it’s demure compared to Miu Miu’s viral micro skirt, which comes in a flippy denim version so short the white pocket liners peep from beneath the hem. The overall mood evokes Christina Aguilera in her barely-there skirt at the VMAs in 2002, which she wore with a chain belt, scarf top, hat and lace-up boots.

Coperni’s miniskirts are particularly popular with stylish Gen Z-ers, who have fallen for Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer’s bold take on the design. Hailey Bieber was snapped in a wraparound Coperni skirt just days after its debut on the runway at Paris Fashion Week, which she styled with preppy knee-high socks and a waistcoat in an echo of the show.
Rihanna is another longtime fan of a high hemline. The new mum’s recent favourites include a jean skirt from Random Identities and a side-slit Balenciaga number – but we really want to see her in Glenn Martens’s autumn/winter 2022 Diesel collection. The Noughties-inspired show, which incorporated several denim looks, put Martens’s craftsmanship and years of experience at Y/Project to good use. The star piece? The tongue-in-cheek belt/skirt hybrids, in retro monogram prints and acid washes.
If your own style leans more subtle, turn to Re/Done, Levi’s and Wardrobe.NYC for a simpler take on the rebooted trend. Dress down a denim mini with a box-fresh white tank top, or take it from day to night by adding an unbuttoned silky shirt and heels.
