Lip liners have had a major redemption arc in the last year. The latest beauty brand to sign on (or, should we say get in line) with the trend? Hailey Bieber’s Rhode. The beauty entrepreneur, model and new mother has been teasing today’s launch for the last month – and finally, the Rhode Peptide Lip Shape is here.
Bieber describes the product to me as a lip contour, not liner, when we meet to discuss the launch. “I love contour for my face, and I love lip liner,” she says. “I’ve also seen where you take a face contour and you put it around your lips to give contour around the mouth area. But a lot of contour products are big and bulky, so it’s hard to get any kind of definition around the lips. So, this product really was about taking an everyday lip liner and everyday contour, and making it into one more compact size.”
Thicker and more rounded than the traditional pencil-sharp liner of the ’90s, but still smaller than a pen, the Peptide Lip Shape isn’t about the super distinct lines you think of with traditional liners.
“The idea is to go outside the lines of the lips and overdo it, and then kind of blend and smudge to the capacity that you want to contour the lips,” Bieber says of her own signature technique. “You paint inside the lines, paint outside the lines, add in more, it’s all about whatever look you like.”

And that’s exactly Bieber’s technique: outside the lines. “I really like something that gives you that appearance of fuller, poutier lips, but still looks natural,” she says. “But sometimes a liner can be super-sharp and intense looking. So I like to over-line, then go in with my finger to do some smoothing.”
The Peptide Lip Shape comes in 11 shades and will be available to shop on rhodeskin.com from 30 January. In the meantime, shop Vogue’s other Rhode picks below.
