When Miuccia Prada took her bow at the spring/summer 2023 Miu Miu show earlier this month, fashion lovers went wild for her outfit: The designer sported a zip-up moto jacket, paired with a classic white tee and matching leather skirt. “Let’s talk about how Miuccia and Rick [Owens] had the best fits of the season,” wrote one Twitter user, also pointing to Owens’s oversized bomber jacket. Decidedly roomier and boxier than your standard moto, the two designers’ fan-favourite jackets make the case for going up a size or two. And it so happens that the slouchy jacket is an autumn trend that’s increasingly being embraced by style stars like Bella Hadid, Rihanna, and Hailey Bieber.
The roomy moto jacket first began gaining traction back on the autumn/winter 2022 runways. At Saint Laurent, the big moto jackets had slouchy shoulders and were worn over long black gowns. Louis Vuitton showed oversized bombers with button-up shirts and ties, while Miu Miu paired them with argyle sweaters and leather miniskirts.

Once the temperatures dropped this month, it didn’t take long for fashion stars to start experimenting with the baggier leather look on the streets. Like the models on the Saint Laurent catwalk, Rihanna draped her XXL bomber over a classic black evening dress. Hailey Bieber styled hers with black dress pants and chunky Balenciaga sneakers, while Kylie Jenner even paired her zip-up moto with a white tank and Skims briefs.
The key to pulling off a roomy bomber? Offset it with a more formfitting bottom, whether it’s a slinky skirt or tailored trouser. Vogue editor Liana Satenstein adds that it’s also good to look for baggy bombers that have shape to them. (She recently picked up a vintage style with boxy shoulders and a cinched waist.) “I really like the idea of this ’80s silhouette with a tiny cinched waist,” she says. “It makes me feel both powerful and feminine.” It may be officially time to retire your snug motos, then – go big or go home!
