The skinny jean revival isn’t for everyone. I, for one, am opting out. Been there, done that, and I don’t want to do it again. I can, however, get on board with straight-leg jeans, as they are the perfect middle-ground between a skinny and a looser style, with a flattering fit that is both versatile and comfortable.
The best straight-leg jeans have a waistband that hits just right – whether you like a high waist, mid or low-rise – so finding this might take some trial and error, but it’s worth it. Getting a length that looks custom-made will also take a few tweaks or alterations, but, again, will pay dividends in the long-run. It’s also worth noting that the bagginess of a straight-leg silhouette will vary per brand and differ with sizing, so be sure to try a range before committing to a purchase.
Personally, I prefer vintage denim, as it has more life than off-the-rack styles. The pair of Levi’s 501s I found in a vintage store in the US several years ago are perfectly worn-in and will continue to age as I wear them. They provide a finish that’s hard to replicate in a factory.
Read on for some of the best straight-leg jeans available now – both new-season and vintage – which offer a promising alternative to those trending, air-brushed skinnies.
