The main message on the bag front for 2024? More is more. Whether it’s the capacious proportions of The Row’s cult Margaux, the jingling charms and cords seen swinging from shoulder bags, the act of overstuffing holdalls – see, Miu Miu’s spring/summer runway – or the pocketed cargo bags doing the rounds on the fashion circuit, excess in its many forms has been a popular accessory trend this year. Studded bags are another major accessory focus for autumn, and can be found at big-name brands, independents and at high-street giants alike.

The vintage market, too, is awash with studded styles. I’ve had my eBay notifications set to find a pre-loved embellished bag ever since I saw an industry peer with a red, Noughties-era Kathy Van Zeeland style a few months ago – scored for £30! – and have seen plenty on my search.

Gimaguas’s now sold-out Franca bag has been a covetable style among celebrities, and has been endorsed by Emily Ratajkowski and Lily-Rose Depp. Founders, Claudia and Sayana Durany, carried the sample for a year to ensure that all details were perfect before launching the Franca in September 2023. It has witnessed numerous restocks, which have often only lasted a few hours. “We were sure we wanted to do thin and very soft leather where the studs become the heavy element in the piece. We developed our first prototype in a medium size and in a butter colour to add some softness to the metallic,” they tell Vogue. “We have been wearing studs for years. They give us a young and daring attitude that resonates with our personality. We like to have these smaller elements that speak louder than our basics garments that are in the mix.”
Khaite’s Elena shoulder bag, meanwhile, has been an instant hit among the label’s loyals – and Vogue’s senior market editor, Maddy Fass – while the studded version of Alaïa’s heart-shaped Le Coeur, introduced by creative director Pieter Mulier, has been another common sighting at fashion week over several seasons.
