The 13 Designer Bags Everyone Is Buying Second-Hand This Year

Scroll on for Vogue’s wish-list-worthy vintage bag edit.

Fendi Baguette

The enthusiasm for Fendi Baguettes shows no signs of fading. Born in 1997, beloved by Carrie Bradshaw and pined after by fashion plates worldwide, the house’s perfectly-slouchy Baguette is perhaps one of the best shoulder bags out there. “It’s difficult to find a good recipe but you should take risks,” its creator, Silvia Venturini Fendi, previously told Vogue. “I feel like I have given my contribution to fashion”.

Dior Columbus

There’s a quiet star lurking in Dior’s archives – beyond the famed Saddle and Lady Dior bags. The Columbus, as seen in the crook of Rihanna’s arm in June, is set to make a comeback this year, with searches having doubled in the first half of 2024, compared to last year (according to Vestiaire Collective). Released in spring/summer 2002, it’s yet another standout accessory from John Galliano’s tenure.

Balenciaga Le City

Demna brought back new iterations of Balenciga’s Le City bag earlier this year, but they lack the worn effect you’d find on a vintage version. In the spirit of its early champion, Kate Moss – who was, apparently, integral to its official release having requested one after seeing it on Nicolas Ghesquière’s runway, despite plans to not go into production – this bag is best worn nonchalantly unzipped and open, with personals on full display. It adds to the charm.

Chloe Paddington

If there was a bag to define the early-aughts boho movement, Chloé’s Paddington would be it. The pillowy, padlock-bedecked – and thus, hefty (it weighs around 1kg when empty) – Paddington was an instant hit after it appeared on Phoebe Philo’s spring/summer 2005 runway, and 8,000 were sold before it reached stores.

The embroidered evening bag

A conversation-starting accessory can break the ice at an event or soirée, and this season, the best party companions come covered in embroidery, beading and sequins. You’ll find plenty of one-of-a-kind vintage styles on eBay, which will be a sure-fire way to impress on an evening.

Louis Vuitton Speedy

The storied French house Louis Vuitton is renowned for its monogram-swathed bags, with a wealth of immediately-recognisable styles, including the Neverfull, Pochette and the Speedy. The latter, originally launched as the Express in 1930, has reentered the spotlight via creative director of menswear, Pharrell, who gave the Speedy a modern update upon his debut – complete with a campaign featuring Rihanna carrying multiple, sunshine-yellow Speedys.

The pocketed companion

After a bag that’ll pack a punch? Keep an eye out for utilitarian shoulder bags adorned with pockets and eye-catching hardware, realised in nylon and leather – or both! Relish in the fact that you have more than one place to store your keys, beauty essentials and sunglasses.

Coach Ergo

We can thank Gen-Z for the revival of vintage Coach bags – namely, Olivia Rodrigo and Dove Cameron, who have both been seen carrying archive styles. The curvaceous Ergo, which was first introduced in the 1990s, has seen a resurgence in popularity, beloved for its minimalist design and versatility.

Mulberry Roxanne

The mid-Noughties were a golden era for Mulberry bags, and in 2024, there’s growing interest in the brand’s heritage styles. Chief marketing officer, Simon Gresham Jones, previously told Vogue that savvy younger shoppers and long-term Mulberry devotees have been keen to snap up nostalgic silhouettes, like the Roxanne, on the Mulberry Exchange, the label’s dedicated pre-loved offering, which has seen sales almost double over the past year.

Gucci Bamboo

Bamboo handles have been a Gucci signature since the house’s Bamboo bag arrived in 1947. The distinctive detail is now seen across its accessories range, while vintage Gucci bags bearing bamboo handles – from larger holdalls to totes – have become commonplace on resale sites.

Bottega Veneta Montaigne

You’d be forgiven for looking past the It-bag that Rihanna had in tow when she wore a slogan tee that read “I’m Retired. This Is As Dressed Up As I Get” – a Peacock Papers style upcycled by Conner Ives – last month. The star rounded off her headline-grabbing look with a vintage Bottega Veneta Montaigne bag rendered in a Brat-ish green intrecciato weave – an under-the-radar style as far as It-bags go. Nonetheless, it’s a bag worth your while.

Hermès JPG Birkin

Known colloquially as the “shoulder Birkin”, Jean Paul Gaultier debuted slimline versions of Hermès’s iconic bag shape, the Birkin, for autumn/winter 2004, with proportions that allowed the famously capacious tote to be carried over the shoulder. At the time of its initial release, Sarah Mower wrote in her Vogue review that the JPG Birkin was “certain to make the legendary Hermès waiting lists even longer” – and 20 years on, the silhouette remains a fashion insider favourite, fuelled by new takes seen on the house’s autumn/winter 2024 runway.

Burberry Bridle

The most-searched-for product on Vinted in the UK is entrenched in Brit nostalgia. The platform reported Burberry’s Bridle bag, emblazoned with the label’s trademark Nova check, has come up trumps as an It-item, making a strong case for bags that are the antithesis of the minimalist movement. It’s as “in-your-face Burberry” as it gets.
