This summer I’ve been seeing lots of innovative ways to style denim beyond jeans and a white tank top, and that’s not just because I went to the Cowboy Carter tour at Tottenham stadium… twice. While Beyoncé fans have unleashed another level of creativity onto their classic Levi’s jeans with embellished trims and “bang bang” patches, we’re also seeing interesting denim styling bubbling up beyond the Beyhive.
One popular styling trick gaining momentum this summer is to fold a large, printed silk scarf in half and then loop it around the hips. It’s a clever way to add a little something to jeans and a white tee, and looks particularly special when you use a heritage silk scarf – Alexa Chung has been wearing a Gucci horsebit-design scarf over her dark tailored denim. Another outfit idea currently rippling through fashion circles comes courtesy of The Row, where in the spring/summer 2025 collection a lace-trimmed slip skirt was layered over a pair of baggy jeans, elevating an otherwise basic, minimalist look. In both cases, it’s all about adding extra texture and adornment to the waist and hips.
The boho movement is going strong this summer and while crochet styles and flared silhouettes will always be associated with this aesthetic, small tweaks to your everyday denim can make you feel like Sienna Miller on the front row at Chloé. Style your blue or white jeans with a broderie anglaise milkmaid top, handcrafted accessories, such as rope necklaces and woven bags, and a pair of clog sandals, and you have an outfit that has just the right amount of whimsy without tipping into Coachella territory.
